Shopping for an RV is challenging because there are so many different factors to consider. How much can I afford to spend on it? How big does it need to be? Should I drive it or tow it?

RV Outfitters of Texas in Nacogdoches is proud to be your Lone Star State RV dealer and we’re here to answer all your most pressing RV questions. Below, you’ll find a helpful buying guide that will assist you in the process of purchasing your first or next RV.

Establish a Firm Budget

First things first: you need to know how much you can reasonably afford to spend on an RV. Don’t forget that the RV’s cost isn’t just the sticker price: you also have to consider additional features, aftermarket accessories, maintenance and upkeep, repair costs, insurance and fuel costs. Look up prices online to determine a ballpark figure and add some more money on top of that to cover those additional costs.

Consider Size

RVs can be as small as a tiny teardrop trailer and as large as a bus-style Class A motorhome. The type you choose will depend on how many people will be in your camping party, how much stuff you need to haul and whether you plan to camp for short periods of time or take longer excursions (or even live in the RV full-time, as some do).

To determine size, think about how many beds you’ll require and how much storage space you want. Also, consider whether you will be comfortable in smaller quarters or if you need a more expansive living space.

Driving Vs. Towing

Your two main categories when buying an RV are drivable RVs (motorhomes) and towable RVs (trailers). Each style has its benefits and one isn’t necessarily better than the other; it all depends on what you require.

If you don’t already have a large towing vehicle and you don’t want to purchase one, a motorhome can be a great choice, since it provides an all-in-one camping solution. Motorhomes do tend to be a little more expensive, although this can be offset by purchasing a used model or a smaller type.

Towable trailers are great if you’ve already got the towing vehicle required to haul them around and you feel comfortable driving with the extra weight behind you. You also have more options when you choose a trailer.
