Lend a Helpful Paw: Traveling with Your Pet
While some animals love to jump in a car or an RV, others might need some time to adjust. Here are a few things you can do to ensure that your four-legged friend has a great time on the road with you!
First, start by taking your dog/cat on short car trips throughout the week leading up to their first adventure in the RV. Some animals get car sick, while others have no problem. If your pet does get sick try; feeding them earlier, giving them more water while they are in the vehicle, and blowing the AC or have the windows rolled down. These test drives will also give you a chance to test out harnesses that latch onto seatbelts or seat covers for the back seats. Getting your pet acclimated to riding in a vehicle will help ease your mind before your trip/vacation even begins.
Next, make sure that your furry friend has all of their vaccinations and has updated tags on their collars. Most campgrounds allow pets, but they will probably make sure that your pet will not cause any issues if they run into other pets. Collars and updated tags are very important because if your companion is to get lost and then found by someone else, your name and number will make the process of getting your pet back home a lot easier. Also, while your pet may be well trained and doesn't have to be on a leash, in most parks and campgrounds, they will need to be on a leash at all times, when they are outside of the RV.
Number 3 on our list is to make sure you are prepared to take care of your pet's business. For cats there are top entry litter boxes that don't take up a lot of space and conceal odors very well. For dogs, just make sure to bring small plastic bags to pick up after them. Chewy.com has a lot of items that will make picking up after your pet hassle free.
Another tip is, to make a road trip survival kit for your companion. Having a bag or a bucket that stores all of your pet's essentials like a water and food dish, their leash, brushes, food, and treats will save a lot of space in your RV. Make sure to keep the kit in an out of reach compartment from little noses that can smell food from a mile away!
