It can be hard to keep up an active and healthy lifestyle when you are travelling. Fast food chains litter most of the highways in the U.S. and gas station deals on giant sodas and unhealthy snacks are very tempting because they are cheap and quick. Before you start your travels this season, check out our ten tips that can help keep you in shape and eat right while you are on the road.

Tip 1: Go Hiking

  • During summer months many people head to cooler climates so they can enjoy the outdoors without getting too hot too fast. Hiking is a great activity for families to spend time together and will help relieve any stress that occurred while traveling. Hiking also helps reduce risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Hiking trails are also great because they can be found at almost all State or National parks.

Tip 2: Eat fruits and vegetables that are in season

  • Purchasing produce that is in season has two major benefits. Number one is that fruits and vegetables purchased in season will taste better and contain more nutrition. Number two is that you help out local farms and farmers when you buy from them. For more information and to see what is in season in your home state, visit the Seasonal Food Guide website. Fun fact for Texans: strawberries are only in season during February till April.

Tip 3: Get a monthly gym membership

  • If you are a full time RVer this tip is for you. Most people would assume it's hard to get a gym membership, if you are constantly moving around throughout the country. However, Anytime Fitness allows members to go to any of their facilities. All you have to do is pay $36.50 a month and wait 30 days after you register to start getting into any one of their numerous gyms in the U.S.

Tip 4: Plan meals ahead

  • Since limited space is one of the biggest factors for people who live in an RV full time, planning meals ahead can save space in the kitchen. When you plan meals ahead a week or two in advance, you don't have to make as many grocery store runs and your pantry/kitchen space is only filled by products that will be used in a couple of weeks. This will also help you keep up a healthy diet, because you will find meals that you enjoy and that are also good for you too.

Tip 5: Walk your four-legged friends

  • Travelling can be hard on pets because of the limited space in an RV and the constant motion of the vehicle. So taking your dog or even your cat on a walk can alleviate their stress and lead to a more calm and relaxing travel experience for you. Experts suggest that you should walk your pet every 2 hours during a road trip, mainly so they don't have any accidents in your vehicle. Also, walking your pet an hour or so a day, keep you active as well!

Tip 6: When traveling, stretch your legs every hour and a half

  • For those of you who don't have a furry friend to look after, it is still important to look after yourself. Stopping every hour and a half to walk around, is always a good idea. It will help keep you from feeling drowsy and will prevent muscle cramps and overall fatigue that driving a lot can bring.

Tip 7: Get a good-nights rest

  • Before you hit the road, make sure you get at least 8 hours of sleep so that you are wide eyed and bushy tailed for your travel day. Getting 8 hours of sleep every night is also good for your overall health as well! In general, driving with little sleep can be dangerous for you and others on the road. However, with an RV in tow, it's even more dangerous because you visibility can be limited.

Tip 8: A healthy body is a happy body

  • Making sure your body healthy is probably the most important tip on this list. Always remember to stay hydrated, take vitamins if needed, and wear sunscreen because that Texas sun won't take it easy on you. If you are hydrated, have your needed nutrition, and don't get sunburned, long-haul travels will be a breeze. Your body is the only one you have, so make sure you give it everything it needs.

Tip 9: Have a monthly clean out your RV session

  • Keeping your RV clean and organized may be hard, especially during the summer months when most people are always travelling and using their RV. Schedule a day every month or so to do an RV clean out, so that your full-time home or your home away from home, will be ready for your next adventure!

Tip 10: Keep your RV healthy by visiting RVO!
