Essentials for Boondocking

There are so many ways to camp in an RV. You can go to National Parks, KOAs, private campgrounds or go boondocking! Boondocking is used to describe RVing outside of a traditional campground with no hookups. You can go boondocking in national forests and sometimes in parking lots or off the beaten path. If you like to go on an adventure and enjoy being in nature, then you will enjoy boondocking! There are some essential items that make it easier to conserve resources.

  • Solar panels/ generator: Even with extra batteries they will eventually need to be charged. The best way to recharge batteries is with a solar panel or generator. Solar panels are considered better than generators especially when it comes to being environmentally friendly. What determined the amount of solar power you need is the amount of power you use. Do a test trip and see how long it takes to run down the batteries. A backup generator is still a good idea if you are planning on boondocking often.

  • LED lights: Switching all the lights in your RV to LED will use 90% less energy than traditional bulbs. They also don’t produce heat and are supposed to last longer than incandescent light bulbs.

  • Water saving showerhead:  An important aspect of boondocking is conserving your resources since you don’t have traditional water hookups. A recommended product is the Oxygenics Bodyspa showerhead, that mixes air with water and gives you a great shower while using 20% less water.

  • Solar lanterns and lights: Boondocking usually involves camping in the wilderness away from city lights so it can be helpful to have some outdoor lights. You could use LED solar string lights or use a solar powered lantern.

  • Portable water jugs : Bring jugs so you won’t have to be limited by the size of your freshwater tank. Portable jugs will allow you to refill the tank without moving water.
